Frequently asked questions

Answers about prices, payment, insurance, claims, storage, partner warehouses and carriers, and how to check that we are who we say we are.

Instant quote and price

Is the instant quote my final price?

No — it's a reference price. A person confirms the price with you before booking. Extras such as a liftgate (lift platform) or an extra stop, waiting time, a truck ordered and not used (TONU) or freight that differs from what you described are charged as your quote's terms explain.

How fast can I get a price?

For truck shipments and pallet storage, you get an instant quote online: a reference price that a person confirms with you before anything is booked. For weekly lanes, special freight, floor space (sq ft) or temperature-controlled or hazmat storage, send the form, call or message us, and a person replies with a price.

I don't have a loading dock or forklift.

Tell us in your request: we look for a carrier with a liftgate truck (a lift platform that lowers the pallets to the ground). It's quoted as an extra before you book.

Payment and account

How do I pay?

You approve the price first. New customers pay before the truck leaves. After your first shipment you can ask for credit.

Do I need an account?

No, not to get a price. If you ship often, you can open a business account in 4 short steps.

Insurance and claims

Is my freight insured on the road?

We only book carriers with at least $100,000 in cargo insurance and $1,000,000 in auto liability, checked on their certificate of insurance. That insurance is the carrier's and follows its policy terms. If your freight is worth more than $100,000, tell us when you ask for a price. Bear Shift doesn't sell cargo insurance; for full value, keep your own cargo policy.

What if something arrives damaged?

Before you sign the delivery paperwork the driver gives you (the bill of lading or proof of delivery), write down what's damaged, take photos and keep the goods and packaging. Tell us in writing within 24 hours (5 business days if the damage was hidden); those notices are for coordination and don't shorten the time you have to claim. The claim itself is filed in writing with the carrier, which is responsible for freight in its care under the bill of lading; we give you the carrier's legal name, MC/USDOT and insurer and help you file it.

Storage

Who is responsible for my goods while they are stored?

The warehouse. Storage is provided by independent warehouse operators. You (or your designee) remain the owner and depositor of your goods; the warehouse is the bailee and is responsible for them while they are in its care, under its warehouse receipt and the law, which can limit the amount it owes. It issues its receipts to you. The warehouse legal liability insurance we ask it to carry covers that responsibility; it isn't insurance on your goods, so for full value insure them under your own policy. Bear Shift coordinates the service, never holds goods in its own name, and helps you with any claim.

Is there a minimum for storage?

There's no single minimum for every request. Tell us how many pallets, for how long and near which city, and we send you the storage price — including any minimum charge — before anything is booked.

How storage works

Partner warehouses

How does my warehouse join?

Use the “Register your warehouse” button in this section. We review your facility, licenses and insurance, then send you the partner agreement to read and sign online.

Who is responsible for the goods in my care?

Your warehouse, while the goods are in your care — that's why we ask for warehouse legal liability insurance. The goods belong to the client and your receipts are issued in the client's name. Bear Shift coordinates and never holds goods in its own name.

How and when does my warehouse get paid?

Before your first order, we tell you in writing when and how you get paid; it's set in the partner agreement and on each storage order.

Is there a minimum or a commitment?

No. You don't commit to a minimum volume, and we don't guarantee one either: each job arrives as a storage order for you to review. The agreement explains how to end it with written notice; we send it to you to read in full before you sign.

Carriers

How does a carrier join?

Send us your MC with the buttons in this section. We verify your authority and insurance and send you our onboarding link to sign the Broker-Carrier Agreement and upload your documents.

When and how do you pay carriers?

Payment terms are set in writing in the Broker-Carrier Agreement you sign before your first load, and we pay after we receive your signed POD, the BOL and your invoice. If you factor, send us your NOA and we pay your factor.

Do I need an account or a login?

No. You get a personal onboarding link to sign and upload your documents.

Coverage

What areas do you serve?

Focused on the Seattle–Tacoma area (Puget Sound). We arrange freight across the Pacific Northwest and to or from anywhere in the continental U.S. (lower 48). Common areas: Seattle · Tacoma · Kent · Auburn · Sumner · Fife · Puyallup. Somewhere else in the continental U.S.? Ask us — we look for carriers nationwide.

Verification

Are you a trucking company?

No. Bear Shift is a licensed freight broker: we arrange your shipment with independent, FMCSA-authorized carriers and coordinate storage with independent warehouses. We don't operate trucks or warehouses.

Are you bonded?

Yes. Our broker bond is on file with the FMCSA: the $75,000 financial security federal law requires of every freight broker. It backs payment to shippers and carriers if a broker fails to honor its contracts to arrange transportation. It isn't cargo insurance and doesn't cover goods in storage.

How can I verify Bear Shift?

Look up our USDOT number on SAFER, the FMCSA registry — searching by USDOT is the most reliable. It shows our broker authority; the bond is listed in the Licensing & Insurance record linked from that page. USDOT 4509218 · MC 77849774 · Verify us on FMCSA SAFER (opens in a new tab)
